HOMEWORK/SPELLING PRACTICE

Each week the students are assigned homework Monday through Thursday.  The format for the homework and the language arts assignments remain the same.  The math page(s) are different each night.  Unless you hear otherwise, the entire packet is due on Friday morning.

Spelling Words:
We have found that many of the students are able to correctly spell a high percentage of the spelling words that are assigned through our reading program.  For that reason, each student has a personal spelling list that has been individualized to meet his/her needs as a learner.

Here's how it works:
The students are pretested on all of the assigned words for the 6 week.  We transfer any of the missed words onto their personalized spelling list.  We then supplement this list with words that have been selected specifically for that student.  Their individual word list typically is made up of the following:  words that were spelled incorrectly in their writing, content vocabulary, synonyms for words that are frequently used in writing, etc.

Each child keeps the list in his communication folder and has a copy in his spelling folder at school.

Within the classroom each child is assigned a Spelling Study Buddy.  They work together throughout the week on word study activities and read each other's spelling words for the test each Friday.  The tests are corrected by me.

In addition to the assigned written homework, I highly recommend the students spend some time on the following activities (as well as revisiting any of the current links on the main blog):

Math Fact Practice
Here are a collection of sites that are great for practicing basic math facts.

MATH MAGICIAN is a timed site for practicing all facts.

THAT'S A FACT is another interactive site for practicing all facts.

MATH DOT COM allows you to select operations, number ranges and even allows you to do a mix.

Online Spelling Practice Opportunities
These are great because they are self-checking and prevent children from reinforcing the incorrect spelling of words.

LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE: Type in your own spelling words and practice them like we do in class.

Visit the TREASURES WEBSITE to participate in activities using the weekly spelling and vocabulary words from our text.

Enter your spelling list into SPELLING CITY and play one of the many games.

Here are some other options for practicing spelling words online.

Type complete sentences that include your spelling words into the box on VOZME and listen to the computer voice read it to you.  Be sure to include at least one adjective.  It's even more fun to create silly sentences.

Type your word list into GEOGREETINGS to see building images.

Create a WORD SEARCH using your spelling words.  Print and solve it.

Write sentences that include your spelling words and LET THEM SING IT to you.

Create a WORDLE using your spelling words.
